Just as Hashem provided the Jews in the desert with their daily allotment and not more, the Baal Shem Tov would not go to sleep until he had either spent all his money that day or had given it to charity. Once, he was unable to fall asleep. He arose from his bed, woke his wife, and asked her if she by any chance had money in her possession that day.
The Ball Shem Tov’s wife had come into possession of a large amount of money earlier that day and had been unable to distribute all of it to the poor by nightfall — some of it had been left over. She reasoned that this wasn’t so terrible and that she would distribute it to the poor first thing the next morning. Upon seeing her husband’s reaction, she grew concerned and asked him “My husband, why are you so worried? Do you need this money for a specific purpose? Perhaps there are Jewish captives that need redeeming?”
The Baal Shem Tov replied,”No my dear wife. I simply was unable to fall asleep and I couldn’t understand why. I thought to myself that perhaps the reason was because there was some money left over from today that we hadn’t distributed to the poor. Now, I ask of you to do me a kindness, my dear wife; please give this money to our poor neighbors right now so that I’ll be able to sleep a little tonight…” ~ The Garden of Riches
