The gift of life is only granted to those who appreciate it.  Even Yaakov Avinu was punished for complaining about his travails.  When Pharaoh asked Yaakov his age, he replied, “Few and harsh have been my years (Vayigash 47:9).  Chazal tell us that for each word of complaint uttered, he lost a year of life, 33 in total.  

The gift of life is for those appreciating it; those slighting it, or complaining about it, lose it.
