Elul! Here’s a Plan!

Rosh Chodesh Elul is here — a month of reflection, connection, and growth.

There is a hint to Elul in the words “Ish l’rei’ehu u’matanos la’evyonim” — “one to another, and gifts to the poor” (Esther 9:22).  The first letters spell Elul.

What is the message? Elul is not only about turning inward but also about reaching outward and strengthening our relationships. And sometimes the greatest gifts are not money, but words: kindness, encouragement, and compliments.

The truth is, many people go days without hearing a single compliment. As Rabbi Leiby Burnham writes: “Being someone who freely offers compliments and kind words is like handing out gifts all day long. It does not cost anything, but its value is immeasurable. And not only do we brighten the lives of others, but we also enrich our own.”

So this week, let’s take on a simple yet powerful challenge: do not let a day go by without giving at least one compliment. I will share daily quotes and short messages you can forward, but do not limit yourself to just these. Look for your own opportunities to brighten someone’s day.

Tzedakah Beyond Money

Now, my son, don’t think that tzedakah is only about giving money to the poor. The Torah instructs us to be kind and assist others in every possible way.

Whoever helps his friend, whether with money or through other means, even with kind words, is considered to have given tzedakah, and his reward is great.

~ Sefer HaChinuch (Mitzvah 479)

What a chiddush! Tzedakah can be given not only with money, but also with kind words, a compliment, or even a smile.

IY”H, we’ll expand on this more next week. Good Shabbos!

It’s a Setup!

You thought it was a setback.

Hashem saw it as the setup for something far greater.

Oy Vavoy

Rav Yerucham Levovitz would say, “Oy to one who does not recognize his weakness, but oy vavoy (double woe) to one who does not recognize his strengths.”

One who does not recognize their strengths cannot possibly achieve their full potential.

When Life Says “No”

Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.

Emuna is knowing that what you got is exactly what you needed.

Davening with Emuna

When one davens, one must believe that

(1) Hashem can help.

(2) He wants to help.

(3) My tefillos make a difference.

More Than a Place to Sleep

“Don’t ask a potential guest, ‘Do you have a place to sleep?’

Ask instead, ‘Do you have a place to get up in the morning?’

A Jew doesn’t sleep for the sake of sleeping.  He rests in order to rise with strength and serve Hashem with vigor.”

From Why to What

Some people want to understand, “Why is Hashem doing this?” But that isn’t as important as “What does Hashem want from me? What should my reaction be to this situation?”

A Yid doesn’t have to understand why, just what.

And to accept every situation with emunah that it is all for our good.

Who Am I to Judge?

I give charity to anyone in need, no matter who he is.

After all, Hashem gave money to me, of all people.

Why should I be more particular as to whom I give?

Speak to Hashem

Make it a habit to speak to Hashem.

You can meditate in thought, but the most important thing is to express it in speech.
