Davening with Emuna

When one davens, one must believe that

(1) Hashem can help.

(2) He wants to help.

(3) My tefillos make a difference.

More Than a Place to Sleep

“Don’t ask a potential guest, ‘Do you have a place to sleep?’

Ask instead, ‘Do you have a place to get up in the morning?’

A Jew doesn’t sleep for the sake of sleeping.  He rests in order to rise with strength and serve Hashem with vigor.”

From Why to What

Some people want to understand, “Why is Hashem doing this?” But that isn’t as important as “What does Hashem want from me? What should my reaction be to this situation?”

A Yid doesn’t have to understand why, just what.

And to accept every situation with emunah that it is all for our good.

Who Am I to Judge?

I give charity to anyone in need, no matter who he is.

After all, Hashem gave money to me, of all people.

Why should I be more particular as to whom I give?

Speak to Hashem

Make it a habit to speak to Hashem.

You can meditate in thought, but the most important thing is to express it in speech.

Your Work Can Be Holy

The Chofetz Chaim once told a pharmacist that he envied him for the countless mitzvos he performed daily, dealing with life-and-death chessed situations.

The pharmacist replied that it was simply his livelihood.

The Chofetz Chaim responded, “If you have in mind that you also wish to do a mitzvah, then all of your actions will become mitzvos.”

Good in Disguise

One must believe with emuna sheleima that everything Hashem does is for a person’s benefit.

And when the tzaros are so great that a person cannot understand how it could possibly be good,  then the good is surely even greater!

The 60/40 Ratio

A man struggling with parnassah and trying to marry off his daughters asked the Beis Yisrael for advice.

The Rebbe told him: “Focus on the good.  Make your tefillos 60% praise and 40% requests.”

The man shifted to gratitude, and within months, his life turned around.

Later, he noticed that Hallel follows the same formula: Six “Hodu LaShem” and four “Ana Hashem.”

This ratio brings yeshuos!  Try it!

Too Much

Someone who does too much hishtadlus can be compared to a merchant who has already paid his taxes, and yet runs after the tax collectors to give them some more money.

~ R’ Eliyahu Dessler zt”l

We build the vessel with hishtadlus, but only Hashem can fill it.
