Thinking about You

The Chasam Sofer teaches: When a person thinks about Hashem, Hashem will think about him.

As it states (Mishlei 3:6), בְּכָל־דְּרָכֶ֥יךָ דָעֵ֑הוּ  with everything you do, remember Hashem. And if you will do so וְ֝ה֗וּא יְיַשֵּׁ֥ר אֹֽרְחֹתֶֽיךָ, He will give you success in all your ways. For if you think about Hashem, Hashem is thinking about you, to help you. ~ R’ Elimelech Biderman Shlita

Your True Character

A person’s true character is ascertained by three parameters: his cup (i.e., his behavior when he drinks), his pocket (i.e., his financial dealings), and his anger. ~ Miseches Eruvin 65b

Scale Back

There are two main traits which prevent a person from serving the Almighty: anger and giving in to desires.

In the case of anger, the goal needs to be to totally conquer it.

But with desires, it is necessary to eat to have the energy to serve the Almighty and for the upkeep of one’s body. Therefore, while it is necessary to break one’s desires, you always need to keep part of those desires.

This is more difficult to master than a trait that must be overcome completely.  ~ Vilna Gaon

Missing Out!

Even if you do indeed accomplish tomorrow what you pushed off doing today, you are still missing out on the good deeds you could have done today.  Each day is a separate entity, and by meeting your responsibilities of tomorrow, you still have not met your responsibilities of today. ~ R’ Chayim of Volozhin zt”l

Today Only!

View each day as if it were your last (see Shabbos 153a).  This is an excellent technique for overcoming laziness.

Imagine that this is the only day you have to accomplish anything, and the page you need to study is the only page there is.  Do the same the next day, and with the next page.  This will enable you to overcome the tendency to push things off. ~ R’ Simcha Zissel Ziv zt”l
