Hide and Seek

The Kotzker Rebbe once saw a child crying.  When the Rebbe questioned his tears, the child explained, “I was playing hide and seek with my friends and they haven’t found me.”

“But isn’t that the point of the game: to hide so well that they can’t find you?”

“Yes,” said the child. “I was pleased that they couldn’t find me.  But I’m crying because they stopped looking for me.”

At that point the Rebbe lamented, “Hashem has been hiding for so, so long, and sadly so many of His children have stopped looking for Him.” ~ R’ Shalom Brodt

Not my Problem

Just like a child does not worry about how his abba (father) is going to pay the bills, we should not worry how our abba is going pay the bills.

My job is do daven 3 times per day, learn Torah and do mitzvos.  It is Hashem’s issue to figure out my parnasah (livelihood).  It’s not my problem unless I want to make it my problem.  ~ R’ Alon Anava

Two Slips of Paper in your Pocket

Every person should have two slips of paper in his pocket.

On one should be written: “The world was created for me,” and on the other: “I am but dust and ashes.”

A person has to have the wisdom to read each slip in the proper time.

~ R’ Simcha Bunim of Parshischo zt”l in Simchas Yisroel

The Natural Faculty of Our Soul

Not with depression, not with fearfulness, not with sentimental weakness must we turn to the Divine Light, but with clear knowledge that what flows from the depths of our heart to approach God is a natural, complete, and healthy faculty.

It is more than just a natural faculty – it is the basic natural faculty of our soul. ~ R’ Abraham Isaac Kook zt”l

Just Do It

The mussar teachings tell us that the most important aspect of loving-kindness is not what you feel, but rather what you do.

Our most valuable acts of loving-kindness take place when we overcome an inner resistance, and do the benevolent thing anyway.  It has long been understood that the heart follows the deed – do good for people, and in time your own heart is transformed into a vessel of unalloyed kindness.  The other benefits, and so do we! ~ Alan Morinis

Cravings

Why do human beings have cravings over and above their physical needs?

It must be that God implanted these unnecessary cravings in us as a challenge.

They give us an opportunity to exercise self-control, which enables us to rise to the highest spiritual levels. ~ R’ Eliyahu Dessler zt”l

50%

The face tells you to share only 50% of what you know, because a person has two eyes to acquire information, but only one mouth to reveal what he saw. ~ R’ Elimelech Biderman Shlita

To what is anger similar?

To the intelligent mind it is like a thick cloud blocking the light of the sun.

To the Yetzer Harah, it is like a break in the fence for the thief.  ~ unknown
