Patience & Control

Patience is a wonderful virtue.  Make an effort to be gentle and forbearing with insulting and aggravating people and with your family.  Be as strong as a lion to control your tongue even if you are burning with the desire to speak your mind.  “A word is worth one gold piece; silence is worth two” (Talmud Megillah 18a) ~ R’ Eliezer Papo zt”l

Running after Pleasures

People who run after the pleasures of this world will lack inner peace as soon as they are unable to gratify their desires.  Therefore, they will suffer even if there are no external factors that are problematic. ~ The Vilna Gaon

A Prayer

Close the Door!

This is very strong.

The Vilna Gaon taught that if you are 100% determined to do something good, there is no room for the Yetzer Hara. If you believe you can do it, you will do it!

The problem is we want to keep the door open for our own comfort so we can escape.  But by leaving the door open, we let the Yetzer Hara in!

So close the door to the questions!  You cannot allow in any room for confusion.  Only when you decide to leave that opening does the Yetzer Hara come in.  Close the door!  ~ Adapted from a shiur I heard from R’ Avraham Moyal Shlita

The Main Cause

I cannot emphasize enough the principle that whenever you do something wrong, ask yourself, “What fault was the main cause?” By overcoming that fault, you will greatly improve all of your future behavior.  ~ R’ Simcha Zissel Ziv zt”l

Be Gentle

“You shall surely rebuke your neighbor” (Leviticus 19:17) is a commandment, but someone who cannot rebuke gently, without hurting the other’s feelings, is free from the obligation to rebuke. ~ R’ Chaim of Volozhin zt”l
