Prof. Dumbledore

I agree with Harry Potter’s Professor Dumbledore that it is the decisions we make, rather than the intellectual gifts with which we are endowed, that are ultimately the measure of the human being and the life that one lives.  ~ R’ Shlomo Riskin

A Spiritual Force

Man’s power of speech is a spiritual force and it has great effect in the higher spheres.  Consequently, the damage wrought by improper speech in the higher worlds is severe and awesome.  And the greater the damage, the greater is the punishment. ~ Chafetz Chaim

The Lottery Ticket and the Chofetz Chaim

A man once said to the Chofetz Chaim, “Rabbi, I have just bought a lottery ticket.  The winner of the lottery will receive a very large amount of money.  Could I please have a blessing from you that I will win, since the money I acquire will enable me to study Torah with peace of mind.”

The Chofetz Chaim gently blessed him, “May the Almighty help you study Torah with peace of mind.”

The man was disappointed the Chofetz Chaim did not bless him he would win.  It occurred to him that perhaps the Chofetz Chaim did not hear exactly what he had requested, so he repeated once more he would like a blessing he should win the lottery, this time in a louder voice.  Very calmly, the Chofetz Chaim reiterated the same blessing, word for word as before.  ~ Hachofetz Chayim as quoted by R’ Zelig Pliskin

Two Scripts

Two ways you could write your life:

“I am so small, and I make such stupid messes that even if the Creator of this magnificent universe had some plan for me, by now He must have given up. So I do too.”

Or:

“I am so small, and I make such stupid messes, yet nevertheless the Creator of this magnificent universe will not let go of His belief in me.”

“And so neither will I.”

~ The Lubavitcher Rebbe as quoted by R’ Tzvi Freeman

The Present

If a person constantly focuses on the future in his present moments, he entirely loses out on his present moments.  When the future finally becomes the present, he will continue to focus on the future of that future.  Hence he never has a present. ~ The Alter of Nervardok
