Choshech

“One who lights a candle in a room cannot make it available only for his friends while preventing his enemies from seeing by its light. God, however, did just that in Egypt. The Mitzrim were wrapped in darkness while Jews were accompanied by light in the very same setting. This will be repeated in the future, as stated by the prophet Yeshayah 60:2- “Darkness will cover the Earth, and thick darkness the kingdoms, and G-d will shine upon you.” ~ Midrash Tehillim

Faith in Faith

A Jew must have faith that, indeed, he has faith.  Even if one feels that his Emunah seems clouded in doubt, he should realize that in truth, only its radiance has become obscured. ~ R’ Mordechai of Lechovitz zt”l as quoted in Torah Tavlin

Inside Out

R’ Nachman of Breslov said: “If you could turn a person inside out (i.e. to see his essence), you would see how myriads of worlds depend upon his every limb.”  When we avoid sin and do good, we not only perfect ourselves, we also fulfill our responsibility to the entire creation, and lift up everything to God. ~ R’ Yaakov Meir Shechter

What does the Yeitzer hara look like?

Some people think that the Yeitzer Hara looks like a murderer.  In one hand a cross, and in the other an axe, and he shouts, “Kneel!”  But in truth, the Yetizer is dressed in white and enwraps itself in slik garments.  In one hand is a book, and in the other delicacies, and it enters, through the opening of an improper attribute, into man’s heart. ~ The Kotzker Rebbe

Appraisal

We must commend and reward the good in our children, not so much to reward them, as to apprise them that what they are doing is good. ~ R’ Shraga Silverstein zt”l

Arrows

The tongue is compared to an arrow.  Unlike a sword that has been drawn and can be returned to its sheath, an arrow, once shot towards its mark, can never be returned. ~ R’ Yankel Taub as quoted in Torah Tavlin

The Brisker Rav zt”l

A man came to the Brisker Rav, Yitzchak Zev Soleveitchik, before Pesach and asked, “Is it permitted to use milk instead of wine for the Four Cups” that are drunk at the Seider?  The rabbi took 5 rubles from his pocket and gave them to the man.

The rabbi’s wife asked “wouldn’t one ruble have been enough for him to buy wine?”

“Perhaps,” responded the rabbi, “but from his question, it was clear that he didn’t have money for meat either, for one can’t eat meat and use milk for the Four Cups.  Therefore, I gave him enough money for both meat and wine for his Pesach Seider.”

When a person wishes to leave one spirit and enter another holy, exalted spirit, he should wash himself so that the holy exalted spirit may settle upon him. ~ The Zohar

Anxiety

Every sin causes a special anxiety on the spirit, which can only be erased by repentance, which transforms the anxiety itself into inner security and courage. ~ R’ Abraham Isaac Kook zt”l

Why we Love

When you fall in love with an earthly pleasure, consider that the power of love was granted to you for the purpose of loving Hashem, and not for unworthy things.  Without the feeling of love, stimulated by worldly pleasures, it would be difficult to feel true love for Hashem. ~ The Baal Shem Tov
