Losses

The advantage of teshuvah over all other ventures is that even losses are converted into profits. ~ R’ Yosef Yozel Hurwitz zt”l  as quoted in Sparks of Mussar

Expenses

All the livelihood of a person is determined between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, except for the expenses of Shabbos, the expenses of Yamim Tovim, and the expenses of teaching his son Torah – in these, if a person subtracts, it is subtracted from him and if he adds, he is given more. ~ Beitzah 16a

Hands Off

In a bathhouse, the Chofetz Chayim once saw a person using an article that belonged to someone else.  The Chofetz Chayim went over to him and whispered, “A person who washes himself with something that does not belong to him ends up dirtier than when he started.” ~ Tnuas Hamussar as quoted by R’ Zelig Pliskin

The Most Profound Joy of All

We visualize life as but a means for joy and pleasure – as merely the medium through which to experience those fulfillments.  We talk about things “worth living for,” yet in our superficial view of life, we fail to appreciate the most profound joy of all: life itself.  ~ R’ Chaim Shmulevitz zt”l

Our Sacred Task

“There is not the vaguest shadow of doubt that, wherever our feet tread, it is all in order to cleanse and purify the world with words of Torah and Tefilla (prayer). We, all of Israel, are emissaries of G-d, each of us as Divine Providence has decreed for us. None of us is free from this sacred task placed on our shoulders.” ~ Lubavitcher Rebbe

A Higher Standard

Israel never failed to be superior to the best of the peoples, yet of them, Hashem expects very much more: “For the Holy One, blessed is He insists, with those close to Him, on details as fine as a hairbreadth” (Bava Kama 50A).  This is an important general principle, that from His people, He expects much more; and all the criticisms [of Israel] must be viewed in this light as being viewed through a magnifying-glass. ~ R’ Avigdor Miller zt”l

Nothing

Besser gornisht tsu machen aider tsu machen gornisht.

Better to do nothing than to make something into nothing.
