Appreciate What You Have

“If you don’t appreciate what you have, you’ll never appreciate what you’re going to get for you’ll get used to that as well.” ~ R’ Moshe Meir Weiss

Which Plea?

[Something to think about when we say Hallel tomorrow morning]

“When the Imrei Emes succeeded his father (the Sfas Emes) as Gerrer Rebbe, a group of older Chasidim asked him, ‘Your father promised us that if we would recite the verse Ana Hashem (Please Hashem) in the Hallel service with great devotion and intent, all our wishes would be granted from Heaven.  Rebbe, we tried.  Why didn’t it work?’  The new Rebbe replied: ‘Which Ana Hashem do you think my father meant: Ana Hashem Hoshiya Na (Please Hashem, save now?!) No.  He meant Ana Hashem Ki Ani Avdicha, (Please Hashem, for I am Your servant (Psalms 116:16)).  Just as a mortal master must provide all the needs of his servants, so God provides for His true servants.  But first, we must commit ourselves to His service.” ~ The Pirkei Avos Treasury.

By the way, you can click on the following link for a special prayer that was composed by the Shloh Hakodosh to express the prayers of parents on behalf of their children. The Shloh Hakodosh said that the optimal time for parents to recite this prayer is Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan (today, Thursday, May 9), but it may be recited anytime.

Hardship

Today’s post is dedicated to the refuah shleimah of Yonatan Eliezer Ben Breindel

In every hardship, search for the spark of good and cling to it. The greater the hardship, the more wondrous the good it bears.

If you cannot find that spark, rejoice that wonder beyond your comprehension has befallen you.

Once you have unveiled and liberated the spark of good, it will rise to overcome its guise of darkness. It may perhaps even transform the darkness fully to light. ~ R’ Tzvi Freeman

Our Lot

“We are unhappy with our lot in life because we’re disconnected from our ultimate purpose in life.  Even temporary success in whatever endeavor we’re currently pursuing won’t satisfy us in the long run unless we’re pursuing our designated path in life.  Without the tachlit, our ultimate purpose, we’ll only look in the mirror and end up saying, ‘So what?’” ~ The Garden of Wisdom by R’ Shalom Arush

Predictions

“Astronomers have predicted that a comet would collide with the earth and cause much death, damage and destruction, but in fact it hasn’t happened.  Because man can say what he wants, but a human mind can never predict with certainty the will of the Almighty concerning this world.” ~ R’ Yosrael of Chortkov zt”l

God Only Requires Words

The people of Israel say, “We are poor.  We have no sacrifices to bring as an offering.”

God replies, “I need only words, as it is written, ‘Take with you words’ (Hosea 14:2).  This refers to words of Torah.”

The people say, “But we do not know words of Torah.”

God replies, “Weep and pray, and I will receive you.”

~ Midrash, Shemos Rabbah – from A Call to the Infinite.

Never Despair

“No one should ever give up hope for himself, however far he has fallen.  Even if he is lying in the very pit of hell, he must never despair of God’s help.  Even there he can draw close to the Almighty.” ~ R’ Nachman of Breslev zt”l

What Can I Do for You?

“The Chofetz Chaim was once overheard making an accounting with God, as it were.  He said ‘Dear God, what have You done for me, and what have I done for You?  You have given me the privilege of writing the Mishneh Berurah, Chofetz Chaim, Shemiras HaLashon, Likutei Halachos, and many other sefarim.  What have I done for You?  Nothing!  Please dear God, give me an opportunity to do something for You.’

To the Chofetz Chaim, whatever he did was only to be expected, and was undeserving of any reward for himself.” ~ The Pirkei Avos Treasury
