How to Fall and Get Up

“If you are falling, don’t be sad; you know G-d is teaching you how to get up.  If you don’t fall, how can the One, the Only One, teach you to get up?  So when you’re falling, let your heart be filled with joy, because the Only One, who knows and can teach you, is showing you how to get up.” ~ R’ Shlomo Carlebach zt”l

You Can’t Just Talk a Big Game

“A person should know and realize that the Creator, may He be exalted, is watching him, and nothing is hidden from Him; neither his outer nor his inner life, neither his outer appearances nor his inner convictions.  And He knows whether a person’s trust in Him is sincere or not.  As it says in Scripture: ‘G-d knows the thoughts of man, that they are in vain’ (Tehillim 94:11); ‘Will not He, Who appraises the heart, discern?’ (Mishlei 24:12); ‘For You alone know the hearts of all men’ (Melachim I, 8:39).

When this is clear to a person, it is improper for him to profess in his speech that he trusts in G-d if he does not trust in Him in his heart and inner self.  For then he would be on the level of those of whom it is said: ‘With their mouth and with their lips they honor Me, while their heart they keep far from Me.’ (Yeshayahu)” ~ Chovos Halevos

The System

“The common conception of how the system works is faulty.

They see a career as “making a living.” A career doesn’t make anything.

What you receive is generated above, in a spiritual realm. Your business is to set up a channel to allow that spiritual reservoir to flow into the material world.” R’ Tzvi Freeman

Heavy of Mouth

“Moshe Rabbeinu described himself as ‘Heavy of mouth and heavy of tongue.’  Were it not for the fact that Moshe was not an accomplished speaker, nor a gifted orator, Bnei Yisrael would have likely remained in Egypt without being redeemed as quickly as they were, since all the days would have gone by with lectures, speeches and debates.” ~ R’ Yaakov Yeshaya Maza zt”l (Rov of Moscow) from Torah Tavlin

Quality over Quantity

“The important thing is not how many separate commandments we obey, but the spirit in which we obey them.” ~ Baal Shem Tov

Good Company

“Young children who cannot absorb Torah knowledge can still attain fear of G-d by being around those who study Torah and just hearing their words.  The same thing goes for adults, too, who can’t learn Torah in depth.  They should try to keep company with Torah scholars – it might rub off on them.” ~ R’ Moshe Sternbuch shlit”a from Torah Tavlin

Bentching

“The Be’er Heiteiv says (Siman 185) ‘Whoever says the blessings of bentching with proper concentration can be assured of having a livelihood of plenty and dignity all the days of his life.’ In today’s financially stressed times, isn’t it worth an investment of bentching a few minutes longer for such a monumental reward?” ~ R’ Moshe Meir Weiss shlit”a

Humility

“Through humility, the fear of G-d will intensify in your heart, for you will always be aware of from where you have come and to where you are destined to go.  You will realize that in life you are as frail as the maggot or the worm – all the more so in death.  It is this sense of humility which reminds you of the One before Whom you will be called for judgment – the King of Glory.” ~ The Ramban’s Letter

Hashem’s Blessings

“How does one acknowledge Hashem’s blessings? ” I asked.

“Simple,” the angel answered. Just say, “Thank you, Hashem. ”

“What blessings should they acknowledge?” I asked.

“If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof
overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a
dish, you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. ”

“And if you received this on your own computer, you are part of the 1%
in the world who has that opportunity.”

“If you woke up this morning with more health than illness. You are
more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day.”

“If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of
imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation. You
are ahead of 700 million people in the world.”

“If you can attend a shul without the fear of harassment, arrest,
torture or death you are envied by, and more blessed than, three
billion people in the world.”

“If your parents are still alive and still married, you are very rare.”

“If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm, you’re
unique to all those in doubt and despair.”

Ok, what now? How can I start?

If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in
that someone was thinking of you as very special and you are more
blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at
all.

Have a good day, count your blessings, and if you care to, pass this
along to remind everyone else how blessed we all are.

Countless Beginnings

“A Jew can begin countless times – even if he falls each time, even if the falls are serious descents into sin –there is always some impression left by each attempt. Every attempt strengthens us for the next one. Each one survives forever.

Rebbe Nachman taught that if a person strengthens himself time after time, throughout his life, to start anew each time – no matter what happens to him, all of these corrections join together to help him, to strengthen him, to support him in truly returning to Hashem. He will eventually see what was accomplished by all of his hard work – nothing is ever lost.  Every positive desire, every small act, every new beginning – leaves an everlasting imprint. The time will come when they will unite and bring the complete salvation.”  ~ R’ Menachem Azolai as translated by Dov Elias
