One Request

Chazal (Taanis 8:) say that one can’t daven for two things at once. One should only daven for one thing at a time.

The question is, we daven Shemonah Esrei, which includes so many requests. How do we daven for so many things at the same time?

The Chasam Sofer answers that our request is really just one: to serve Hashem. The rest are details.

We ask for health, parnassah, wisdom, but they are all for the same purpose: To serve Hashem.

Each Word

Each word of kindness, each word of Torah or Tefillah, creates a heavenly advocate for the speaker.

Each hurtful word, each word of loshon hora or falsehood, creates a prosecuting angel.

Why People with Emuna are so Happy

When one believes in Hashem, he knows that everything is for the good.

Someone who doesn’t believe in Hashem doesn’t have that comforting thought.

The believer also relies on Hashem to provide him with all his needs.

The non-believer is full of worry, not having from where to draw hope.

Used to the Dark

If you know that it is dark, it is easy to turn on the light.

If you know that your spiritual life is lacking, it is simple to remedy the problem.

Knowing what is wrong is half the cure.

But if you’ve become accustomed to the dark to the point that you don’t notice it, then it is very difficult to find the light

A soul in this situation needs assistance from outside.

How Would You Feel if…?

No one is happier than someone who believes in Hashem.

How happy would you be if the world’s greatest king talked to you, loved you, and desired your good deeds?

How would you feel to speak with this king every day?

How happy and proud would you be if this great king was your father?

Multiply this joy infinite times and that is the joy of Emunah.

Truly Free

Only a person who can overcome his desires for what he does not have is truly free.

He is the only type of person who will live a completely happy life since whatever he does not have does not bother him.

Davening for Money

If you add up the intention of all the tefillos of Bnei Yisrael, you will see that their primary request is for money. But if you add up all the money of Bnei Yisrael, you will see that it is all about Torah and mitzvos.

~ Rebbe Meir of Premishlan zt’l (1783-1850)

Don’t feel guilty about davening for money.  Think about it. Almost all the money we spend is for raising our families to live as Yidden, study Torah and perform mitzvos.

Silence is a Virtue, but…

The Gemara says that the me’il atoned for lashon hara. Hakadosh Baruch Hu says “Let clothing that has a sound atone for the aveirah that was committed with a sound.”

But why would the sound of the bells at the hem of the me’il atone for the sounds of lashon hara? Wouldn’t it be better to atone for lashon hara with silence?

It is because silence is a virtue, but an even greater virtue is to speak properly – words that help and encourage others.
