See, I have placed you in charge of all the land of Egypt (Bereishis 41:41)
Imagine a person God forbid becomes bankrupt, and they are down in the dumps, living in darkness. How long does it take for them to become the richest man in the world? It doesn’t happen over night, it takes a long time. But you know what is Yosef Hatzadik all about? Yosef Hatzadik shows us how it can happen in one second.
For twelve years Yosef Hatzaddik is sitting in the lowest prison, and in one day he becomes the ruler of Egypt, which in those days was like becoming the King of the world.
So in Psalms it says Mekimi Me’afar Dal(Psalms 113:7) You Raise the poor from the dust. Master of the World, take me out from the dust, but don’t just take me out of the dust for the moment. Lehoshivi Im Nedivim (Ibid), seat me amongst the princes. I want to wake up the next morning and have breakfast with the top people of the world.
Do you know what the holiness of us Jewish people is? We can be in the lowest of the lows, and yet in one second reach the highest of the highs… in one second. ~ R’ Shlomo Carlebach
With all due respect to the Gadol Rav shlomo, I respectfully disagree. Holiness is hard work. Kedusha is ascending levels, learning, focusing, constant self improvment. It does not happen overnight. One does not wake up in the morning and become the Vilna Gaon as Rav Green of Bircas Hatorah. It is a process. Yosef’s was a process also. It took 12 years. It might have turned on a dime, but it was 12 years.
With all due respect for the shikker dovid, i think you are missing the point. Yosef was just as holy the day before he was freed from jail as he was the next day. The point is that one should never give up. One can be going through a hard time and think that he is doomed for life. However, this teaches us that Hashem can turn things around in an instant.
“Do you know what the holiness of us Jewish people is? We can be in the lowest of the lows, and yet in one second reach the highest of the highs… in one second. ~ R’ Shl”
This is what the Shikker Dovid is referring to. There are no highest of highs, unless we work at it, work ourselves, it is a process.
Shikker Dovid, first of all, I understand your point, although i am not sure if i totally agree. There is that story in the gemara of the man who slept with every harlot in the land and right before he died, he realized how wrong he was and did some serious teshuva. When he died, a Bas Kol was heard stating not only was he forgiven, but referred to him a a Rav. A person could turn it around anytime.
However, that is not the point here. You have to read the entire story to get the context. Reb Shlomo is saying that one day Yosef was in jail and the next day he was rich and powerful. That can happen to any one of us. He calls us holy, but he is talking about our luck being changed. “We can be in the lowest of the lows, and yet in one second reach the highest of the highs…” Never give up hope!
I agree, never give up hope. But holiness is not hocus pocus. It is real. Never give up on faith, but work on holiness.
