When Rabbi Yisroel Salanter was on his deathbed there was only a single individual in the room. Rav Yisroel realized that most people feel very uneasy about being alone in the same room with a corpse. To allay his companion’s fears, Rabbi Salanter spent this last moments in this world convincing him that it is needless to be afraid of a corpse and that he should not be nervous ~ Tnuas Hamussar as quoted by R’ Zelig Pliskin

I heard this incredible story from Harav Zelig Epstein zt’l – and he began to cry after telling this story – Rav Yisrael Salanter a saintly gaon, spent his last moments in this world concerned about his fellow man and not focused on his own last moments to amass mitzvos and Torah – what a lesson and example. [I think there is more to the story in how/when Rav Yisrael left this world, which might have been on a Friday night]
