True Emuna

When a person finds himself in trouble and distress, and he sees no natural way to escape from his Evil Urge, and he then casts his lot with the Lord and trusts in Him, this is still not trust of God on the level of truth, because he has no other choice.  If, however, a person lives comfortably and lacks nothing, and nevertheless negates all and trusts in the Lord – this is true trust. ~ The Kotzker Rebbe

I was wondering about this one as well, but I don’t think the Kotzker is taking anything away from the person who is in trouble and turns to Hashem. That is one level. Another level is someone who has everything he needs and wants, and still turns to Hashem. In other words, I was thinking that sometimes a person is going through a hard time…perhaps a family member is ill or he is having financial problems, and he turns to Hashem and davens harder than he had when things were good. I think the Kotzker might be saying that the person who has plenty of money, no one he knows is ill and everything is going well for him, when he turns to Hashem and davens like the other person, that is a higher level. He doesn’t lack anything, yet he still turns to Hashem.

      Does that make sense?
