Before Entering the House

Rav Shlomo Zalman Aurbach was once walking home with a talmid who noticed him straightening his frock (coat) and adjusting his hat before entering his house.  The talmid couldn’t help asking, “Is the Rebbe expecting a special visitor?”  Rav Shlomo Zalman said no.  “Is the Rebbe fixing himself up for the Rebbetzin?”

“No,” he answered.

“So why is the Rebbe adjusting his hat and coat?” the talmid asked.  Rav Shlomo Zalman explained by quoting the gemara, “When a man and wife enjoy marital harmony in their home, the Shechinah dwells in their home, as the letters denote – there is a yud in the middle of ‘ish‘ and a hei by ‘isha,’ which combine to spell Hashem’s name.  Thus, I am preparing myself to greet the Shechinah.”  ~ From the book, The Gadol HaDor
