Hide-and-Seek

Once, the young grandson of Rabbi Boruch of Mezhibuz was playing hide-and-seek with his friends.  The young boy hid, and waited for his friends to find him.  But no one came.  He left his hiding place to discover that they had become involved in a different game.  In great disappointment, he went to tell his grandfather what had happened.

As Rabbi Boruch listened to the child cry, his own eyes filled with tears. “This is exactly what is happening to the Shechinah,” he sighed.  “She is hidden, and no one is looking for her.  God wants us to search for and reveal the Divine Presence in the world, but instead, everyone is involved in his own life and concerns, and so the darkness of exile continues.” ~ R’ Yaakov Meir Shechter
