When I was young, I went to Manhattan to see the Empire State Building. I was amazed at the allure of the streets, the splendid cars, the well-dressed people, the elegant stores. Then, we went up to the tower, and eventually reached the lookout, peering down from the 102nd floor.
From that vantage point, those well-heeled people suddenly looked so small, the cars like little toys: it wasn’t as impressive anymore.
A ben Aliyah, someone who lives on the higher floors, who is looking for something more elevated, suddenly sees how the glimmer of this world fades.
From up there, things below aren’t as alluring anymore. ~ R’ Eliezer Herzka
