The Midrash calls the monarchy of Achashvairosh “a monarchy based on flattery.” At first, to meet the demands of his close advisors, the king executed his wife, Vashti. Then, to satisfy the demands of others who felt that this was wrong, King Achashvairosh killed his previous advisers.
