What determines the direction of a sailboat, the wind or the sails?  It can’t be the wind, because sometimes you see sailboats going in opposite directions. So clearly, it’s the sails.

As we journey through life, there are winds, waves and storms, but we are the captains of our vessels. The sails are our thoughts. Who controls them?

We do. We are the captains.
