The Other Set of Eyes

A person can see more with eyes of faith than with those of the head. ~ The Kotzker Rebbe zt”l

All Mental

Regardless of where you are physically, the state that you will presently be in is determined by your thoughts.  Your emotional reality depends upon the focus of your mind.  Mentally go to a place where you will automatically experience the state you wish to be in. ~ R’ Yeruchem Levovitz zt”l

Big Mistake

A pleasure seeker mistakenly thinks that the only way he can be happy is by successfully gaining everything he desires.  The opposite is true.

The only way to have a guarantee of happiness is to learn that you can be happy even though you are not able to acquire everything you desire. ~ R’ Zelig Pliskin

Keep Running

A man complained to R’ Simcha Bunim of Parshischo, “the Talmud (Eruvin 13a) states that when a person runs away from honor, honor will run after him.  I run away from honor, but honor does not pursue me.”

“The reason,” explained the Rabbi, “is because you keep looking backwards and therefore it hides from you.”

Investment Opportunity

There was a businessman who would often seek business counsel from the Sfas Emes. Once, the Rebbe told him, “Now it’s Elul. The wisest investment is to invest in this month.” ~ R’ Elimelech Biderman Shlita

It’s Elul!

The Vilna Gaon states that the three most painful days for the Yetzer Hara are (1) Rosh Chodesh Elul, (2) Rosh Hashanah, and (3) Yom Kippur, because people do teshuvah on these days.

Today is Rosh Chodesh Elul.

Your Biggest Problem

A man once approached the Kotzker Rebbe and cried to him about all his tzaros. The Rebbe asked, “Do you daven? “The man replied, “Believe me, I have so many problems, I’m not able to daven.” The Kotzker said, “So why did you tell me all your other problems and leave out your main problem? Your inability to daven is your greatest problem! You should have told me about that problem first.”

3 Thoughts to Consider

I heard from a certain talmid chacham that a person should think the following three thoughts [and he will surely devote himself to Torah study]:

(1) One should think that he has only one more day to live.

(2) He only has this one page of Gemara (or just this chapter of Mishnayos) to study.

(3) He is the only person in the world whom Hakadosh Baruch Hu commanded to study Torah, and the existence of the entire world is dependent solely on him.

~ The Chofetz Chaim (Ahavas Chessed 2:11)

Unlearn the Hatred

Love cannot be taught.  All we can hope for is that maybe we can unlearn all the hatred.  Because hatred is taught.  Love is from Heaven.  Let there be love between us.  Let us return to whatever we learned in Heaven before we were born.~ R’ Shlomo Carlebach zt”l
