A pleasure seeker mistakenly thinks that the only way he can be happy is by successfully gaining everything he desires.  The opposite is true.

A man complained to R’ Simcha Bunim of Parshischo, “the Talmud (Eruvin 13a) states that when a person runs away from honor, honor will run after him.  I run away from honor, but honor does not pursue me.”

The Vilna Gaon states that the three most painful days for the Yetzer Hara are (1) Rosh Chodesh Elul, (2) Rosh Hashanah, and (3) Yom Kippur, because people do teshuvah on these days.

Today is Rosh Chodesh Elul.

Prayer has the capability of altering nature.  Since Hashem is above nature, those who turn to Him raise themselves above the limitations of nature.  ~ The Garden of Emuna

A man once approached the Kotzker Rebbe and cried to him about all his tzaros. The Rebbe asked, “Do you daven? “The man replied, “Believe me, I have so many problems, I’m not able to daven.” The Kotzker said, “So why did you tell me all your other problems and leave out your main problem? Your inability to daven is your greatest problem! You should have told me about that problem first.”

Love cannot be taught.  All we can hope for is that maybe we can unlearn all the hatred.  Because hatred is taught.  Love is from Heaven.  Let there be love between us.  Let us return to whatever we learned in Heaven before we were born.~ R’ Shlomo Carlebach zt”l
