Quoting Tzaddikim

Whoever repeats Torah concepts that tzaddikim taught, the tzaddikim will daven for him in heaven, and they will be melitz tov for him (speak for his benefit in Heaven. ~ Sefer Chassidim (224) as quoted by R’ Elimelech Biderman Shlita

Thoughts

Guard your thoughts carefully, for thought can literally create a living thing.
The higher a faculty, the further it can reach.
You can kick something with your foot, but throw it higher with your hand. You can reach still further with your voice, calling to a person very far away.  Hearing reaches yet further, for you can hear sounds like gunfire from a very great distance.  Your sight reaches even further, seeing things in the sky.  The higher the faculty, the further it can reach.  And the highest of all is the mind, which can penetrate the loftiest heights.
You must therefore safeguard your mind above all else.  ~ R’ Nachman of Breslov zt”l

Imagine

Imagine you could open your eyes to see only the good in every person, the positive in every circumstance, and the opportunity in every challenge.  ~ The Lubavitcher Rebbe zt”l

Embarrassed to Face God?

Citing the gemara in Brachos that one who is embarrassed of his sins is forgiven for all of them,  I heard from Rav Shmuel Braun in the name of Rav Kook zt”l that if a person feels so low from the sins that he committed to the extent that he cannot face Hashem and daven properly or perform mitzvos with a healthy and glad soul, this person should realize that at that moment, because of this feeling of embarrassment before Hashem, it has just rectified him completely; he is a complete bal teshuvah and is now on such an exalted level, that he should be so happy to serve Hashem.

Always Happy

One who enjoys what he has, regardless of whether he has a lot or a little, will be as if he constantly attends parties.  He will always be in a good mood.  Conversely, a person who keeps focusing on what others have and what he is missing suffers constantly. ~ Metzudas Dovid on Mishle 15:15

Taken for Granted

When a person is ill, he strongly wants to become well.  He imagines that when he is cured he will feel constant happiness.  But shortly after he is cured, he takes his good health for granted. ~ Chochmah Umussar.

Prayers for our Children

The answer to yesterday’s “Identify that Prayer” is “Viharev Na Hashem” of Birchas HaTorah at the beginning of Birchos Hashachar each morning.
Regarding this prayer, the Ateres Zekeinim (Orach Chiam, Siman 47) states “Parents should always pray that their offspring be Torah learners, tzaddikim – refined in character.  They should pray with great feeling when saying Ahava Rabbah and the blessings over the Torah, especially when saying “and may we and our offspring…”  So too,  during the prayer U’va L’tzion Go’ail when saying, “in order that we don’t toil in vain and don’t have children for naught.” In these places, one should think about his children and pray intensely that they be Torah learners.

Identify that Prayer #19

“Please, Hashem, our God, sweeten the words of Your Torah in our mouth and in the mouth of Your people, the family of Israel. May we and our offspring and the offspring of Your people, the House of Israel – all of us – know Your name and study Your Torah for its own sake.”

Reply with the identity of this prayer.  The answer will be in tomorrow’s post.

External Factors

A truly happy person does not allow his happiness to be dependent on any external factor over which he may not have control. ~ Chochmah Umussar

Stronger Impulses

In every stage of spiritual growth a person has different impulses and desires.  The more elevated a person becomes, the more he has to fight off strong impulses (Sukah 52a).  A person should not think he is on a lower level because he feels even stronger impulses than before he worked on improvement.  Expect new tests whenever you reach a higher spiritual level.  ~ Likutai Aitzos
