The Real Test

Some people behave properly when they are calm and all is going well.  But as soon as they become angry, they behave as if all the laws of the Torah do not apply to them when they are angry.  The foundation of Torah is to be in control of your behavior even when you find yourself in difficult situations. ~ Das Chochmah Umussar

The Main Intent of Prayer

The main intent of prayer is that we should recognize and express the fact that there is nothing in the universe to whom it is fitting to pray other than God.  He is the Master of the universe, and we mention our many needs in our prayers in order that we should recognize that there is none who can grant our needs, and save us from all our troubles, other than God.  Upon Him we cast our buden.

It is with that intent that we fulfill our obligation to pray.  God will do what is good in His eyes, whether He accepts our prayers or not. ~ R’ Moshe of Trani zt”l (1505-1585).

One Small Difference

The only difference between a poor person and a wealthy one is the future.  Whatever happened to them in the past is no longer relevant.  We all live in the present moment regardless of our life situation.  No matter what happens in the present moment, in a split second the present will become the past.  Not worrying about the future enables you to enjoy what you have already and are doing in the present. ~ Kochvai Ohr

Refraining from LH

By refraining from lashon hara, one spares himself the anger of others and causes them to love him and trust him with their secrets.  Middah k’negged middah (measure for measure), no one will ever speak badly of him. ~ Shemiras Halashon citing the Arizal

R’ Elimelech of Lizhensk Zt”l

R’ Elimelech of Lizhensk said, “I am confident of being admitted to Gan Eden.  The Heavenly Court will ask me, ’Melech, did you study adequately?’ and I will say, ‘No.’ They will say, ‘Did you daven properly?’ and I will say, ‘No.’  They will say, ‘Did you give adequate tzedakah?’ and I will say, ‘No.’  They will say, ‘He is truthful.  Let him into Gan Eden.’”

Deal with Now

Even if you have devoted a lot of time and effort to some project, if you presently become aware that it is better to cancel it, do so.  The fact that you have invested much energy is irrelevant.  Deal only with the question: “Is this the right thing to do now?” ~ Chayai Hamussar

Sincere Generosity

When you could have given a smaller donation and other people would have considered that amount sufficient, your giving a larger sum shows that it comes from sincere generosity.

Imagine the Worst

When you feel anxiety about a future event, imagine the worst and accept it.  This has a very calming effect.  For example, if you are afraid you will miss a bus and feel anxiety, imagine you have already missed it and accept the consequences.  If you are afraid you will be fired from your job, imagine you have already been fired and accept it. ~ R’ Zelig Pliskin
