Truth and Humility go Together

R’ Elimelech of Lizhensk said, “I am confident of being admitted to Gan Eden.  The Heavenly Court will ask me, ‘Melech, did you study Torah adequately? and I will say ‘No.’ They will say ‘Did you daven properly?’ and I will say, ‘No.’  They will say ‘Did you give adequate tzedakah?’ and I will say ‘No.’ They will say, ‘He is truthful. Let him into Gan Eden.'” ~ R’ Abraham Twerski

An Honest Man

Of all the superior character traits possessed by our ancestor Yaakov, the Torah chooses “an honest man” as the highest praise, to teach us that nothing is more worthy of our respect and admiration than a life lived with honesty and righteousness. ~ Shaloh HaKadosh

Before me Always

It is the duty of conscientious people to constantly reflect that God’s glory fills the whole world: we are ever in His presence and must fulfill His will.  This is the meaning of the verse “I set Hashem before me always” (Psalms 16:8). ~ The Chofetz Chaim zt”l

God is good to me!

“God is good to me!” ~ Sarah Dina bas Yehoshua Yosef

Those are the words my grandmother chanted with such fervor almost daily throughout her life.  That is despite the fact that she lived through the horrors of Auschwitz, lost her parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews in the Holocaust other than one sister, struggled with her hearing due to being beaten by a Nazi, and lost her husband, the love of her life, at such a young age.  She was an amazing woman who lived a life full of emuna, who truly felt and thanked God everyday for giving her such a good life.  She passed away peacefully in her sleep, early shabbos morning.  May her neshama have an aliyah and may we learn from her example.

Hidden Light

Our Sages tell us that even if a person restrains himself from forbidden speech for just a mere moment, he will merit the special hidden light reserved for those who guard their tongues – as we see from the words of the Midrash, quoted by the Vilna Gaon: “For every single moment that a person guards his mouth from speaking forbidden words, he merits to enjoy a hidden light that no angel could possibly fathom.” ~ R’ Asher Wasserman

The Rebbe Rashab of Lubavitch

Rabbi Shalom Dovber (the Rebbe Rashab) once instructed his son (the Rebbe Rayatz) to travel to a particular place to help a particular chassid and businessman. When the Rebbe Rayatz returned, he told his father, “I have done everything you told me. I did the favor in the best manner possible.”  The Rebbe Rashab replied, “You are making a mistake. The favor you have done is a favor for yourself, not for the other. The Almighty has done the favor for the other; he arranged emissaries to fulfill the divine providence. The favor you have done is for yourself as it says in the Midrash, “More than the house owner does for the poor man, the poor man does for the house owner.”

A Mark on the Forehead

A devout man who had passed away appeared to his friend in a dream.  The friend noticed that the man had a mark on his forehead.  The departed told his friend that his mark was a punishment for speaking during davening and Kaddish, and for failing to cut his nails on erev Shabbos.  ~ Ba’er Heiteiv 268:112

Silence is a Skill

The craft of a person in this world is to behave as if mute!  The craft is not to be a babbler. This is something one has to learn: a baby knows how to talk and babbles as it pleases him. Silence needs to be learned, because silence is a great skill, and by it you recognize the person of intelligence.  The nature of a person is his solitude. That’s the only way for the soul and spirit to develop their strength. ~ R’ Shlomo Wolbe zt”l

Torn Up

Rabbi Yehoshua Ben Levi said: Whoever responds “Amen, Yehei Shmei Rabba…” with all his might, the evil decrees against him will be torn up. ~ Talmud – Shabbos 119B
