For Their Own Good

It is the most natural thing in the world for us to punish our children or to put difficulties in their way “for their own good.”  How often do we do the same to ourselves for our own good? ~ R’ Shraga Silverstein zt”l

I Found You

Where, Lord, will I find you: Your place is high and obscured.

And where won’t I find you: Your glory fills the world….

I sought your nearness: With all my heart I called you.

And in my going out to meet you, I found you coming toward me. ~ Yehuda Ha’Levi

Mussar is not Enough

It is not enough simply to learn mussar in order to help us refrain from lashon hara.  We must also learn the laws of what is considered lashon hara.  What good is all the mussar in the world, which warns of the terrible prohibition of lashon hara and rechilus, if a person permits himself with baseless excuses that “This is not considered lashon hara,” or “The Torah permits lashon hara about that person.” ~ Shemiras Halashon, introduction

On a personal note, I have unfortunately witnessed the truth of the above quote.  Too many people don’t know the halachos of Lashon Hara and therefore speak it without realizing it.  Today, we should all take it upon ourselves to learn these halachos.   You can purchase seforim or simply subscribe to daily emails on the topic.  There are so many to choose from.  May we all be zoche to learn these halachos and not speak lashon hara from this point forward.

R’ Refael of Bershid zt”l on Tisha B’Av

Rabbi Refael of Bershid was once visiting a certain town.  On Tisha B’av, he was informed of a bitter feud between two groups, and was asked to serve as mediator.

“We assume, however, that you will not want to hear the two sides until tomorrow, since today is a fast day,” they told him.

“On the contrary,” responded Rav Refael. “The destruction of the Temple was caused by unwarranted hatred (Yoma 9b).  What is more appropriate than trying to promote peace and brotherhood on this day?” ~ Midrash Pinchos as quoted by R’ Zelig Pliskin

2 Paths

It is important to visualize the two paths that are before you.  One path leads to the Garden of Eden, eternal bliss.  The other path leads to tremendous suffering.  When you see this clearly enough, you will have a strong inner feeling.  This will become part of your reality and will have major ramifications in your way of life.  Developing this awareness is a high priority.  Do all you can to internalize faith and live with it daily. ~ R’ Yisrael Salanter zt”l
