Generosity

The giver gets more than the recipient.  The recipient acquires something material and limited.  The one who gives, however, acquires for himself a good and pure heart. ~ The Alter of Novardok

Love your Neighbor as Yourself

The Arizal writes that before saying one’s prayers, one should accept upon himself the mitzvah to love one’s neighbor as oneself “thereby his prayers will join those of all of Israel, rise up to Heaven and work effects.”

“If G-d forbid, the hearts of Jews are not united, neither will there be unity in Heaven.  When our hearts unite in the lower world, our souls unite in the higher worlds.  Thereby, our prayers too, join together, an Hashem accepts them.” ~ Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 12:2

Passion for the Truth

You are forbidden to say that a person did something improper, even if you are motivated by kinaas ha’emes – that is, you are agitated about the transgression and insistent that the truth be known.  Although your words might be meant l’shaim shomayim and are without malice, they still constitute loshon hora.

You are allowed to relate details of improper action only if your intention is constructive.  ~ Guard Your Tongue

Saving Others from Hurt

In a well known incident, someone who had driven R’ Moshe Feinstein zt”l to yeshivah accidentally slammed the car door shut on R’ Moshe’s fingers.  R’ Moshe clenched his fingers with his other hand, bit his lips against the excruciating pain and walked into the yeshiva building without uttering a sound.

Later, several talmidim who had witnessed the incident asked R’ Moshe why he had restrained himself so.  He answered quietly, “The young man was kind enough to drive me to yeshivah.  Could I hurt his feelings by letting him know something was wrong?” ~ 5 Great Lives

What are you talking about?

We must speak of Hashem’s love more than anything else. When people get together and talk about where they’ve traveled, or what kind of car or furniture they’ve bought, they’re wasting their emotions. These feelings of enthusiasm are given only for one purpose — “Nagilah v’nismicha bach”: to love Hashem and come as close as possible to Him. ~ R’ Avigdor Miller zt”l

If you are able to correct someone and refrain from doing so, you are held responsible for that person’s wrongdoings. ~ Rambam, Hilchos Daios 6:7

When Learning and Praying

“When a Jew studies Torah he feels like a student before G‑d, his teacher, Whose wisdom he is studying. When he prays, he feels like a child before his father. ” – Rebbe Yosef Yitzhak Schneersohn of Lubavitch
