You Gotta Smile

A talmid of a mussar yeshivah came to R’ Nosson Zvi Finkel zt”l in Hebron to announce his engagement.  R’ Nosson Zvi felt that the boy was too serious, and reprimanded him for not having a pleasant countenance – especially when he had a fiance to consider. ~ Sparks of Mussar

Act Upon it

The Kuzari was told in a dream, “Your intentions are desirable, but your deeds are not.” R’ Yosef Yozel Hurwitz zt”l posed a question: We, too, seek the truth.  Why do we not have dreams in which God reveals to us whether our deeds are desirable?

The answer is that the Kuzari was searching for truth in order to act upon it.  We, however, seek truth merely for the sake of seeking.  We fail to act even on the truth that we are aware of.  So Divine clarification would be wasted on us.  ~ Sparks of Mussar

Inviting in Guests

“Inviting in guests, people who are God’s creations and children, is an even greater sign of our love of God than actually receiving the Divine Presence itself.” (Talmud Shabbos 127a).  If we love God so much, we are always ready to open up our homes to God’s children.  This is why inviting in guests is greater than receiving the Divine Presence.  ~ R’ Shalom Noach Berezovskt zt”l

What Should be Done

I can answer the question, what should not be done.

He is Lax in Fulfilling a Mitzvah

There are some mitzvos which are, unfortunately, so neglected that failure to observe them is not generally condemned.  Nevertheless, it is considered loshon hora to relate that a person is remiss in fulfilling that mitzvah. ~ Guard Your Tongue

A Candle

“A Jew is like a candle,” the Lubavitcher Rebbe once explained to a chassid, “and his task is to light up other Jews.”

The chassid asked, “Rebbe, did you light my candle yet?”

The Rebbe replied, “No, but I have given you the match.  You must now strike it and ignite it yourself.” ~ Chicken Soup to Warm the Neshama

What are you using it for?

A person who uses his mental ability solely for worldly pursuits instead of for understanding the true Heavenly light is like a villager who finds a magnificent sculpture and uses it as a scarecrow.  ~The Alter of Novhardok
