Sudden Unexplained Happiness

Sometimes you walk along and suddenly you are so happy, yet you don’t know why.  Rebbe Nachman says it is because, at that moment, they declared in Heaven to give you something, even if it might only arrive in a hundred years from now. But your soul heard of the gift and was happy. ~ R’ Shlomo Carlebach zt”l

A Rational Approach to the Divine Origin of Judaism

Below is a fantastic video which I felt compelled to share.   If you have time now or over the long weekend, I highly recommend you watch this.

Is there a rational basis to believe that Judaism is true? In this lecture, Lawrence Kelemen presents a rational approach to the Divine origin of Judaism. You will find out the one unique claim that Judaism makes that no other religion in history has made.

Lawrence Kelemen graduated UCLA and did graduate studies at Harvard. In university he came up with a formula to demolish any religion. When he applied that formula to Judaism – the formula fell apart. You are about to learn why that is so and why Judaism is real. Enjoy!

For those of you receiving this on your phones, click on the title above to take you to the video or watch it on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEg_Oys4NkA&feature=youtu.be

What Yours Words Create

The Torah decrees: “Lo yachel devaro” – Do not violate your word.  The word yachel relates to the word chalul – hollow.  A person must realize that his words are not empty and hollow, but rather they give rise to a certain spiritual reality.

If one speaks words of Torah and sanctity, he creates sacred angels who intercede on his behalf in the heavens.  If, however, one speaks words of frivolity and lightheadedness, not to mention lashon hara and gossip, then he creates destructive angels who operate against him, Heaven forbid.  ~ The Arizal Hakadosh zt”l from Torah Tavlin

Young Aryeh Leib

R’ Aryeh Leib, son of the Chofetz Chaim, was a child genius.  Once he had the occasion to present a Talmudic lecture to a group of exceptional scholars, whom he dazzled by resolving a difficult problem raised in the Shaagas Aryeh.  The listeners were impressed and expressed their admiration.  The young Aryeh Leib was flattered and responded, “I hope one day to be able to resolve all of the Shaagas Aryeh’s difficulties.”

Uncharacteristically, the Chofetz Chaim stood up and publicly rebuked his son: “Such talk will never let you develop into a really great scholar.”  When relating this story, R’ Aryeh Leib would say, “And sadly, my father’s words came true.” ~ The Pirkei Avos Treasury

Proportionate Response

“Rabbi Zadok of Lublin used to say that whenever you think of Hashem, He is thinking of you; but Hashem thinks of you in proportion to the amount of consciousness with which you think of Him.  To put it in other words, He gives you as much light as you have vessels to receive.”  ~ The Light of Ephraim by R’ Simcha H. Benyosef

Exploiting a Setback

Crucial Lesson on Judging Favorably

The Baal Shem Tov taught that man decides his own punishment for his transgressions.  “He is given the opportunity to view someone else doing exactly what he did, in a slightly camouflaged form, and in a fit of righteous indignation he passes sentence.  Only then is the façade lifted, and he realizes that it is he who will receive the punishment.  The fashion in which man judges his friend is in reality the way in which he is judged from Heaven.

It is for this reason that we are taught to judge everyone favorably.  One should not be in a rush to interpret his friend’s actions with severity, for he may actually be passing judgment on himself.  The reverse is also true; one who judges others favorably effects a favorable judgment for himself.” ~ The Pirkei Avos Treasury
