No Angel can Fathom

“Each moment that a person refrains from speaking the forbidden, he merits a hidden light that no angel can fathom.” – The Vilna Gaon quoted by the Chofetz Chaim

The Poor Man’s Korbon

“The reason that it is permissible for a poor man to bring a smaller korbon than a wealthy man, is that his poverty itself is an atonement, and through it he is already cleansed of his sin.” ~ Techeles Mordechai from Torah Tavlin

Don’t be Sad About the Future

“People walk around sad because they don’t know what to do with their future.  You have this minute, right now! What are you doing with it?

The difference between sadness and joy is very simple: sadness always tells you, ‘Oy vey! What are you going to do in ten minutes?  What will you do ten years from now?’

If you are really filled with joy for one minute, then you will also know what to do the next minute.” ~ R’ Shlomo Carlebach zt”l

Trust in Hashem alone

“If a person realizes that not one of the created things can help him, except with the permission of the Creator, may He be exalted, he will turn his heart away from fear of them or hope in them, and will trust in the Creator alone, as it says: ‘Trust not in rulers, in a human being, in whom there is no deliverance’ (Tehillim 146:3)” ~ Chovos Halevovos

Your Deeds are Recorded in a Book

The end of the first mishna of the second chapter of Pirkei Avos states “Consider three things and you will not come into the grip of sin: Know what is above you – a watchful Eye, an attentive Ear, and all your deeds are recorded in a Book.”

People tend to underestimate the significance of their actions and thoughts.  The Midrash (Vayikra Rabbah 34:9) teaches: Had Reuben known that God would write [in the Torah, that he had wanted to rescue Joseph], Reuben would have carried Joseph on his shoulders.  Had Boaz known that God would record that he had given some food to Ruth, he would have given her a sumptuous meal.

The mishna therefore teaches that all of our deeds are recorded in a Book because they truly are important.  If we are constantly aware of the significance of our actions and that everything is being recorded, it will prevent us from stumbling into sin.

There is Always Hope

“There is always hope.

Even when you mess up, you have not wrestled control from Him. After all the dust has settled, where you are and how you are is exactly as He had planned at the outset of creation.

And so, there is always hope.” ~ R’ Tzvi Freeman

The Chida and Smelling Tobacco

“It is told of the holy Chida that he loved smelling tobacco. Once, when visiting a certain town, he had left his tobacco at his dinner host and wanted it in middle of the night. So, he trudged in the cold to his earlier host and awoke him to retrieve his tobacco. In the morning, he considered how he had allowed his base urges to rouse someone from his sleep and he regretted his actions. Despite how much he enjoyed his habit, he immediately accepted upon himself to never use smelling tobaccos again for this impulse had led him to momentarily be inconsiderate of others. He realized that his desires were too powerful and needed to be entirely eradicated.” ~ Rav Menachem Azolai as translated by Dov Elias

How are You doing?

The Beis HaLevi once met a former student who had become a successful manufacturer.  He asked the student “How are you doing?” The man answered, “Baruch Hashem, Rebbe, I have a large factory and am doing quite well.”

The Beis HaLevi asked again, “Yes, but how are you doing?” Again the student provided a glowing account of his commercial success.  Finally, the Rebbe said, “Everything you’ve described are things that God does for you.  I want to know about the areas of life that are in your hands.  How is your spiritual agenda – your davening, your learning, your giving of tzedakah? How are you doing?” ~ The Pirkei Avos Treasury

The Future Redemption

“At the time of the future redemption, all will be as clear as day, and we will understand exactly how the hand of Divine Providence guided us through the long night of exile.” ~ R’ Elchanan Wasserman zt”l Torah Tavlin
