Faith

“Faith is not about everything turning out OK;  Faith is about being OK no matter how things turn out.”

Emuna Shlema

“Some believe in a faraway Creator, or a Creator that has some undefined, removed, and minor influence on their lives.  Few fully connect the tiny and mundane details of their daily lives to emuna and to Divine Providence.    Emuna shlema, or complete emuna, means that one relates every single happening in life to Divine providence.” ~ The Garden of Emuna

Parshas Shoftim

“The Torah demands of the Jewish People: ‘Judges you shall appoint upon yourself.‘  The Torah is telling every person who is in a position of power, whether he is a judge, an officer, etc. that the same criteria and set of rules that you use to judge others you should apply to yourself as well.  Demand of yourself the same yiras shomayim – fear of G-d, that you demand from those you are judging.” ~ R” Yaakov of Polnoa zt”l (Toldos Yaakov Yosef) – Torah Tavlin

Emuna means…

“Emuna means that we accept everything that happens to us as Hashem’s will.  And, when we need help, a solution to a problem, our daily needs, or whatever we desire, we speak to Hashem.” ~ The Garden of Emuna

Vilna Gaon on Shmiras Haloshon

“For every moment one guards one’s tongue, he earns reward that is beyond the comprehension of angels.”  Vilna Gaon citing Midrash

…The principle way of meriting the World to Come is through guarding one’s mouth, which is greater than Torah learning and mitzvos because the mouth is the Holy of Holies…” (Excerpts from a letter by the Vilna Gaon)

A favorite of mine

“The Midrash explains (Yalkut Shimoni, 31) that when Hashem decreed that Moses wouldn’t be allowed to enter the Land of Israel, Moses prayed 515 prayers, until Hashem commanded him to stop praying!  Why?  With one more prayer, Hashem would have been obligated to rescind the decree.

We learn from the above Midrash that when we meet the required prayer quota for a given request, the request is filled!  As long as Hashem doesn’t command us to stop praying, we can – and must – continue to pray until our prayer is answered.” ~ The Garden of Emuna

Look for the Signals

“When people ignore delicate signals, Hashem is forced to catch their attention with louder and much more severe signals.”  ~ The Garden of Emuna

Important Request

“There are those who acquire wealth but in truth have nothing.” (Proverbs 13:7)

The Chofetz Chaim explains, that the above verse speaks of a man who had devoted his entire life to Torah and mitzvos, building a vast reserve of wealth for the next World.  But when he reaches his destination, and his accounts are considered, he discovers that actually he has nothing at all.  Because of the loshon hora he had spoken, his merit evaporated without a trace.  After a lifetime of labor, he arrives in eternity empty-handed.

Instead of just reading the above quote, let’s try to apply it.  I would like to suggest that we pick a time, perhaps this shabbos during lunch, to make a concerted effort to not speak any loshon hora.   Even if you feel like you have to speak loshon hora, push it off till after the meal.   Slowly but surely, we will hopefully eliminate loshon hora from our speech altogether.   Good Shabbos!

Keep on Praying

“Rabbi Chanina says, anyone who prays long enough doesn’t go away empty-handed!” ~ Talmud – Berachot 32b

A Humble Person

“A humble person realizes that nothing is owed to him, and therefore, he feels satisfied with what he has.  Such a person does not raise his sights to receive what is above him.  He constantly has peace of mind and feels the joy of life.”  ~ R’ Chaim Meir Hagar zt”l (Vizhnitzer Rebbe) from Torah Tavlin
