Planted

I once received a letter from a girl who composed the most loving poem to Hashem, full of hope and optimism, from the deepest and darkest of places. In it she wrote:

“Sometimes when you’re in a dark place, you think you’ve been buried, but you’ve actually been planted. You can be in the worst place in life and believe you are having more dirt and more dirt being thrown on your head, and you wonder to Hashem, ‘What are You doing? You are burying me so deep!’ The truth, though, is that He is planting you. You are a seed that is awaiting to grow.” ~ R’ Zecharia Wallerstein

Belief in You

Everybody believes in God, hopefully.  But do you know how much God believes in us?  The world still exists.  That means God believes in us that we can fix everything.  ~ R’ Shlomo Carlebach zt”l

Deep Roots

Emuna gives a person the will to live and the power not only to withstand though times, but to gain by them.  Emuna resembles the deep roots of a tree that enables it to withstand wind, storm and drought. ~ R’ Shalom Arush

Not About the Hours

The determination of a masmid (diligent learner) is not how many hours he learns a day, but how many minutes he learns an hour. ~ Rabbi Jonathan Rietti

Searching

Let the heart of those rejoice who seek the Lord ~ Divrei HaYamim 16:10

It is only human to feel downcast when searching for a lost item and to be happy when it is found.  “Those who seek the Lord” act differently; they seek Him through music and prayer, and even while engaged in the search, they are happy. ~ R’ Simcha Bunim of Peshischa

Aish Kodesh

R’ Kalonymus Kalman Shapira of Piaseczno, also known as the Aish Kodesh, would tell his students each day when lessons were over and they were about to go home:

“My dear boys, never forget that the greatest thing in this world is to treat other people with kindness.  Always remember that you are not doing a favor to those in need, they do you a favor by turning you into a benefactor.”

Take Advantage of an Eis Ratzon

When one passes a difficult test, that time is an eis ratzon, a very auspicious time, for
tefillah.

There was a yungerman whose daughter was lo aleinu in a hospital in Be’er Sheva. The doctors lost hope for her survival. They were only treating her to alleviate her pain, before the inevitable. The doctors said that they needed a certain medication to alleviate her pain, but the hospital in Be’er Sheva didn’t have it, and it could be purchased in Tel Aviv. The father decided that he would go there – anything to help his daughter. When he got off the bus in Tel Aviv, he was confronted with great tests, but he was strong and he guarded his eyes. Then he remembered that this is an ideal time for tefillah so he davened for his daughter’s recovery.

When he finished his tefillah, he began walking towards the drug store. He was just about to go inside, when he got a phone call from his wife. He waited a few moments until his wife stopped crying and was able to speak. “Our daughter is conscious,” she said. “The shocked doctors checked her, and they say that the disease totally left her.” He was rewarded for passing the test, and his tefillos were answered at that time. ~ R’ Elimelech Biderman Shlita

The Chozeh of Lublin

The Chozeh of Lublin once wanted to arrive early in the morning to take care of an important matter. The day before, he asked his wife to prepare his evening meal earlier than usual. But it turned out that the meal was prepared much later than usual.

He commented, “It would be natural for me to become angry now. But the only reason I wanted to have the meal early was to do the will of my creator. This too is the will of my creator that I should not become angry.” ~ Niflaos HaRebbe
