In Everything

Hashem is present in every action and in every thought. ~ R’ Nachman of Breslov zt”l

The prayer I quoted in yesterday’s post was “Ribono Shel Olam” which is found at the very beginning of Kriat Shema Al Hamita, the bedtime shema.  This is an important prayer which everyone should recite before they go to sleep.

Identify that Prayer #2

Master of the universe, I hereby forgive anyone who angered or antagonized me or who sinned against me – whether against my body, my property, my honor or against anything of mine; whether he did so accidentally, willfully, carelessly, or purposely; whether through speech, deed, thought, or notions; whether in this  gilgul (transmigration) or another gilgul – I forgive every Jew. May no man be punished because of me. May it be Your will, Hashem, my God and the God of my forefathers, that I may sin no more. Whatever sins I have done before You, may you blot out in Your abundant mercies, but not through suffering or bad illnesses. May the expressions of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart find favor before You, Hashem, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Even When You See it with Your Own Eyes

Even if you personally see someone wise sinning, say that perhaps he did it for the right reasons.  And if it is a sin for which it is impossible to attribute to the right reasons, our Sages say, “When a wise person sins, do not assume that his guilt remains the next day, since he surely repented” (Talmud Berachos 19a). ~ R’ Yeshaiah Horowitz zt”l

Distance Yourself from It

Hashem said, “if you desire to escape from the punishment of gehinnom, distance yourself from lashon hara, and you shall merit both this world and the world to come.” ~ Midrash Tanchuma

The Sanzer Rebbe

One time, the Holy Sanzer was sitting on a ship going from Vienna to Budapest.  He was so deep in thought, he had a big pipe in his mouth smoking but he didn’t even feel that the pipe fell into the water.

He arrived in Budapest and asks the Chassidim, “Where is my pipe?” so the Chassidim say “Rebbe, about five hours ago it fell in the river.”

So he went off the boat, walks up to the water and says “G-d, if You want to give me back this pipe, give it to me right now.”  He put his hand in the water and took out the pipe.

If you want something, ask for it.

If you really want something, ask to get it “right now.” ~ R’ Shlomo Carlebach zt”l

Heal the Soul

The words of Torah heal the soul, not the body. ~ Rambam

Obstinacy

Obstinacy is one of the main requirements if you are to serve God.  Understand this well.  Every person who wishes to enter the service of God, even the most insignificant of men, will inevitably have to endure innumerable ups and downs.  He will find himself thrown down and cast aside in every conceivable way.  To endure all this takes endless fortitude.  At times the only way to strengthen yourself is with sheer obstinacy.  Nothing is more vital than this obsitinacy.  Remember this well, for you will certainly need it in your quest. ~ R’ Nachman of Breslov zt”l

Identify that Prayer #1

I am adding something new.  IYH, every now and then, I will quote a portion of tefilah from the siddur and you have to try and figure out what tefilah it is and where it is found in the siddur.  Let’s try it:

“Do not fear sudden terror, or the holocaust of the wicked when it comes.  Plan a conspiracy and it will be annulled; speak your piece and it shall not stand, for God is with us.”

Can you identify this tefilah?  The answer will come in tomorrow’s email.  If you know it, click “comment” to answer.
